this. To get something truly decentralized, not just geeks have to play with it but the mass public has to adopt it. Else you have the decentralized geeks on one side, but they still have to play along with the rest of the centralized world (or get isolated).

Now something like torrents seems a pretty good attempt at it (as far as I can see, my knowledge on this subject is rather limited). But for the rest (say, your own mail server and dropbox-like solution hosted at your home) this seems simply impossible due to lack of proper, easy to use tools. The masses need a one-click type of solution, not a dozen of cryptic command line instructions for an OS most of them don't even run.
