I believe there are even online banking applications which reserve the right, in their terms, to detect if a device is “rooted” and refuse to operate on them.

This drives me nuts. I want to improve my security posture and user experience by owning and controlling my own phone and breaking its link to the vendor, removing shitty bloatware to reduce the attack surface, etc.

I'm happy to take responsibility for applying my own updates / patches. Samsung and Google don't have a monopoly on being competent to secure a device, and as the device ages they do an increasingly shittier job of that than other options out there.
