I think Deepmind has a different PR team, they seem to put a lot more effort into publicizing their discoveries.

But plenty of big results from people working directly for Google & FB.

Have you noticed how phones/home devices can actually understand you accurately now? Didn't used to be that way a few years ago, etc, etc.
