> Of course, MNG also shares a number of PNG's best features: unambiguous pronunciation (gotta love it)

Ping or Pee-Enn-Gee, that's not unambiguous! :P

The pronunciation of PNG is provided in the spec:

> This International Standard specifies a datastream and an associated file format, Portable Network Graphics (PNG, pronounced "ping"), for a lossless, portable, compressed individual computer graphics image transmitted across the Internet.

https://www.w3.org/TR/2003/REC-PNG-20031110/#1Scope

I believe that the spec for MNG also specifies its pronunciation.

Oh. Now that the subject is on the table, how do you pronounce `jpeg` ? Gee-Pug or Jee-Pee-Gee ? (French do the Gee-Pug thing).

Jay-peg is the most common I hear.

Never once have I heard PNG pronounced like “ping”.

FYI there's another FA featured here yesterday about JASC PSP.

JASC Animation Shop supports MNG IIRC.

MNG is a dead format. APNG won. Not really sure why MNG is here on HN now.

APNG won, yet the web is still full of GIFs…

It seems to be supported by all major modern browsers except Edge: https://caniuse.com/#feat=apng

A growing proportion of those "gifs" are actually webm now, so it's not that bad...

And a pain to download :/ (looking at you giphy).

Also Facebook / imgur / giphy need to get their stuff sorted with linking and embedding clips. It seems totally random whether a direct link to a given video from imgur will embed as an auto-playing video, a thumbnail plus link, or a bare link.

IE 11 is a major modern browser. It's still supported and has more users than Edge and Safari combined.

It would seem that things are not so simple.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APNG

It's rather unfortunate that the apng file extension wasn't adopted instead.

I've never come across a .APNG file in the wild, do you know of any sites using the format ?

I haven't noticed one on a website. But I know iMessage uses APNG for animated images, and every major browser besides Edge supports APNG.

I think I've seen an actual .apng maybe ... once?

The article mentions that MNG supports sprites and commands for movement, which would make animations not only take up less storage space in the file but also much crisper.
