You don't get hired without credentials. In academia it is publications and only big publishers like Elsevier, Springer, Wiley etc are acknowledged. Kinda like Microsoft, Google, Apple in software.

I seem to remember one of my lecturers having to get their doctoral research published in a journal before they could pass the course.
