For the very earliest employees in a startup, you should pay little more than living expenses in salary, because you only want people who want mostly equity. How much equity to give them is always a negotiation.

The underlying principles are described here: http://paulgraham.com/equity.html

I've asked THE JS MAN himself, Doug Crockford of Yahoo!, what the best book on JS is and he says its: JavaScript: The Definitive Guide (5th Edition) by David Flanagan (edition is important... 4th one is not that good). Doug says a bit more about the lack of any good JS books:

"Bad Books

Nearly all of the books about JavaScript are quite awful. They contain errors, poor examples, and promote bad practices. Important features of the language are often explained poorly, or left out entirely. I have reviewed dozens of JavaScript books, and I can only recommend one: JavaScript: The Definitive Guide (5th Edition) by David Flanagan."

Also, make sure you watch his tutorial videos. They're awesome! There is a series of four intro videos and three advanced videos:

I haven't had to reinstall once, and with XP I typically would have 3 times by now.

I had no idea MS OSes were so bad. Reinstalling the OS is actually a routine thing?

He was standing on the wrong side of the mirror at this very moment:

> When I first looked at Facebook it was in the bar of a hotel with workmates. [...] They showed me - it meant nothing.

People who use Facebook wonder what going to bars is for:

"As far as I can see, it's a building where you put out an image of yourself [a bunch of make-up and/or cologne] and other people do the same.

Then you all send each other little glances and approach one another and make pretend 'friends'. And that's sort of it, really."

My day job is as a web developer for a small PC repair shop, and this article pretty much nails it. Many custom builds are requested with XP, and a lot of customers with Vista complain about it and some have us downgrade them to XP.

I'm just glad I switched to Ubuntu.

We track our expenses using gnucash, which can generate cool reports like this one:

So that's how we (2 of us) spent most of our $15k summer funds.

I agree; the users that complain about Windows stability (the ones that aren't Mac using journalists) are the type that install sleazy toolbars and slipshod freeware.

It's like having sex with everyone in the art department and wondering why you have herpes.

In the Midwest in dollars per hour, newbs bill for 30-35 per hour. junior programers 35-55 senior 50-80 niche jr 50-85 niche sr 85-150 enterprise niche 100-250

80,000 to 120,000 depending on experience.

Anything less, and you are getting screwed. Anything more, and you are actually good either technically. or at negotiation.

Don't sell yourself for little thou. You have all the power of negotiation BEFORE joining the company. After that, it will be very hard to get any big raises.

The other thing, is to consider equity. Are you joining as just an employee of as a early starter employee that will creat their technology backbone.

I think the point of the anti-Vista stuff is not that Vista is significantly worse than other MS OS, but that it is not enough of an improvement over XP for people to put up with the speed hit. It seems the people who hate Vista the most are people who use Mac OS or Linux anyway.
